From Concept to Completion: Grand Opening of UNM’s Lobo Welcome Center Project

Franken Construction is proud to celebrate the grand opening of The University of New Mexico’s Lobo Welcome Center, a project that has transformed the face of campus and will serve as the first impression for future generations of Lobos. The ribbon-cutting ceremony marks the culmination of a project that began with strategic planning and thoughtful renovation efforts designed to modernize UNM’s campus while maintaining its historic charm.

A Look Back at the Early Stages of the Project

The transformation of the Lobo Welcome Center began with the demolition of several vacant and outdated buildings, part of UNM’s long-term plan to enhance campus facilities and support growth. The buildings that were cleared to make way for the new center included the Aerospace Studies Building (Building 159), Army ROTC (Building 175), and the Army ROTC Annex (Building 175A).

This strategic initiative laid the groundwork for the newly renovated Lobo Welcome Center, which now stands at the heart of the campus. Serving as the first stop for prospective students and visitors, the Welcome Center showcases UNM’s unique architectural style, blending the iconic adobe walls and etched wooden pillars that reflect the historic elements of the university.

A First-Class Welcome Experience for Future Lobos

Designed by McClain + Yu Architects and brought to life by Franken Construction, the Lobo Welcome Center is a state-of-the-art facility that will introduce potential students to the thriving campus community. The building not only reflects the unique cultural and architectural heritage of New Mexico, but also offers modern amenities for a welcoming and engaging experience.

“Every year, thousands of potential students interested in The University of New Mexico, from New Mexico and beyond, come here and think about if this is the place for them. This is the kind of facility that will be their starting point, their launching point to come in and start to discover, ‘is The University of New Mexico the right educational environment for me to start my journey to higher learning,’” said University Provost James Holloway during his opening remarks at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Shaping the Future for the University of New Mexico

One of the most remarkable features of the Lobo Welcome Center is how it seamlessly integrates into UNM’s historic campus architecture while offering a fresh, modern experience. Sporting the traditional adobe façade and wooden pillars, the building feels right at home among the university’s iconic structures, giving future students a glimpse into the balance between heritage and progress at UNM.

The Lobo Welcome Center represents more than just a new building; it’s a gateway to opportunity, a place where students will take their first steps on the path toward higher education. We are honored to have contributed to this meaningful project, which stands as a symbol of the university’s ongoing commitment to growth, innovation, and community.

As UNM continues to welcome thousands of potential students each year, the Lobo Welcome Center will be the space where they begin their journey to becoming proud Lobos. It’s a facility that honors the university’s past while embracing its bright future.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Lobo Welcome Center was a momentous occasion, attended by university officials, faculty, students, and community members. UNM leadership spoke about the importance of this new facility and the role it will play in shaping the university’s future. Guests had the opportunity to tour the building and experience firsthand the welcoming and innovative design.
